Santa Cruz de la Palma
Welcome to the 'Very Noble, Loyal, Undefeated and Very Charitable City, Garrison Town and Port of Santa Cruz de Santiago de Tenerife'... These are the well deserved official titles of the town, as you will see if you wish to stay and visit this place. But if you want to call this bright city by the name that friends give to it, then call it just "Santa Cruz".
Attractions
The town can easily be explored on foot. Begin at the main square, the Plaza de Espaņa, where you can see the 16th century El Salvador Church with a finely decorated ceiling and Gothic vaulting. Opposite the church stands the town hall, a 16th-century Renaissance style building. At the delightful Plaza de Santo Domingo is the chapel of the former monastery with an ornate baroque altar (the chapel may only be open upon request).
Shopping
Shops can be found in the town center, about a 10-minute walk from the ship. Wine, embroideries and cigars are good buys.
Food
Some typical dishes include rancho canaria, a rich vegetable soup, and papas viudas, a blend of roast potatoes with carrots, peas, parsley, olives, green pepper, ham and onion. Seafood can be found in most restaurants. A typical Spanish snack is tapas, which goes well with a glass of red wine.
Currency
The Euro (€), the currency of the European Union, is the official currency of the Santa Cruz de la Palma.
