Montevideo

Heavily influenced by European culture and architecture, Uruguay´s capital is a vibrant, modern city famed for its fresh water, white sand beaches. The Museo do Goucho chronicles the region´s famed cowboys and the colorful Mercado del Puerto boasts a variety of eateries.

Attractions

Highlights include Ciudad Vieja (Old Town) with its 18th century buildings, the vibrant Mercado del Puerto, and the bustling commercial activity of Avenida 18 de Julio and its cultural offerings (theatres, museums and art galleries).

Shopping

Avenida 18 de Julio is Montevideo's main street with restaurants and shops. Leather goods, hand-knit sweaters and gemstones, such as amethyst, topaz and agate, are considered good buys. HECOACA is the brand name for local handicrafts of excellent quality. A store is located across from the port entrance. Some shops in downtown may close for lunch.

Food

Asado is a typical local barbecue with several varieties of meat. The method of preparation has developed into an art, with the main ingredients beef, chicken and sausage. Steak is the best choice of fare with seafood close behind. For dessert try the caramel-like dulce de leche. A popular drink is mate tea made famous by the gauchos. Traditionally, the tea is sipped through a silver straw from a bombilla (special cup).

Currency

The Uruguayan Peso ($U) is the official currency in Uruguay. US dollars are occasionally accepted. The airport's taxi cabs accept US dollars and the Hotel check-out requires US dollars. However, you will need Uruguayan Pesos for small expenses.
